Westmalle Double is a top fermentation beer, re-fermented in the bottle. This beer is the oldest Trappist beer of the Abbey of Westmalle, it has been for sale since 1856. It has a dark, red brown color, a rich and complex flavor with hints of herbs and fruits. Its aftertaste is slightly bitter and it has an alcohol content of 7.0%.

The Abbey of Westmalle, located in the North of Flanders, is part of the Cistercian Order. It was founded in 1794 and it is one of Belgium’s 6 Trappist abbeys. They currently brew two beers: the dark beer Westmalle Double and the blond beer Westmalle Tripel.
