Palm Hop Select is the latest beer by Palm Breweries; it was launched in March 2013. Contrarily to Palm’s other beers, which are amber colored, this is a blond beer. Its name refers to the hops that are grown in the brewery’s own garden in Steenhuffel. These hops, called Hallertau Mittelfrüh were planted in 2011 and could first be harvested in the fall of 2012. They have a light green color and a very refined aroma.
Palm Breweries made particular efforts to create a unique beer. They add hops at three different stages of the brewing process. The first time is during the boiling stage, when hops are added to the beer in the boiling kettles. This gives the beer its typical bitterness.
The second stage, at the end of the boiling process, is when the Hallertau Mittelfrüh is added, brewers call this the ‘late hopping’. At the third stage, called the ‘dry hopping’, the brewers add their home grown hops which give this beer its unique flavor. After all this hopping, the beer undergoes a re-fermentation in the bottle.
Palm Hop Select is a beautiful blond beer, with a nice foamy head. It has a complex, balanced, hoppy flavor with hints of caramel and fruits and an alcohol content of 6.0%.
