This Affligem beer is considered to be one of Belgium’s best blond abbey beers. It has won several international prizes. It has won, amongst others, the European Beer Star in the category ‘Belgian Style Ale’ in 2007, 2008 and 2012.
Serving temperature: 6-8°C
The abbey of Affligem is situated about 20 km to the West of Brussels and it is considered to be the most impressive Benedictine Abbey in Belgium. The brewing history of the abbey dates back to as far as 1129, and it has survived some turbulent periods in history. But currently, the Affligem beer is not brewed at the abbey any more. Since 1970, it is being brewed under license at the nearby brewery De Smedt in Opwijk. Besides this blond beer, there are several other Afligem beers. The two best known ones are Affligem Double, a dark beer with about the same alcohol volume and Affligem Tripel, a stronger blond beer.
