Kriek is a cherry beer made with lambic. There are two different ways of producing Kriek, and the difference in flavor between them is big.
The first one is the old-style Belgian kriek beer, which is characterized by its very sour flavor. With this production process, real cherries (sour cherries, not the sweet ones) are added to the lambic beer and they stay in the barrel for several months. This style of beer was almost extinct a few decades ago, but it has since made a huge comeback and now some of Belgium’s sour lambic beers are even in Ratebeer’s top 50 of the world’s best beers. Most famous beers in this category are Cantillon, 3 Fonteinen Kriek, Hanssens and Oud Beersel . The sour kriek beers are the most expensive one because of the use of real cherries and also because they are produced on smaller scale.
The second category are the sweeter Belgian kriek beers, who are still the bigger category of the two. These beers are characterized by a sweeter flavor and also by the fact that they sometimes contain added cherry juice rather than actual cherries. The best known beers in this category are Lindemans Kriek, Timmermans kriek and Belle-Vue Kriek.
This collection contains only the kriek beers made with lambic, kriek beers based on a regular blonde beer, can be found in the category 'Other Beers'.
