Amber beers have a flavor which is about half way between blond beers and dark beers. Typical for these beers are the use of mineral-rich water, caramel malts and very soft hops. They can roughly be divided into two categories.
The first one and the most famous one is also known as amber ale, belgian ale or speciale belge. It contains famous beers like Palm beer, Vieux-Temps, De Koninck or Speciale De Ryck. These beers contain around 5% of alcohol and they were the most popular beers in Belgium in 18th and 19th Century, before the Pils beers were introduced.
The other category contains stronger beers with an alcohol content that can vary from around 6% to even 12% (like Bush Ambree), these beers have often re-fermented in the bottle to attain this higher alcohol percentage. The most famous ones are Kwak beer, Piraat, Quintine Ambree and Caracole.
