Belgium’s Trappist monks have been brewing beer for centuries, and their beers are considered to be the best in the world. Belgium contains no less than six Trappist abbeys, nicely divided between the Flemish North of the country (Westmalle, Achel, Westvleteren) and the Wallonian South of the country (Chimay, Orval, Rochefort).
The rules to receive the label ‘Authentic Trappist Beer’ are very strict: the beer must be brewed inside the walls of a Trappist abbey by Trappist monks. Since there are only very few monks left, this is not always evident. If you are new to Trappist beer, the choice is actually very simple, because they are all wonderful beers and you can't really choose wrong. But here are some hints for those of you who don’t know where to start: Chimay Blue is a unique, world famous amber-colored Trappist beer. People who prefer the blond or tripel beers should definitely try Westmalle Tripel, Orval beer or the limited edition Chimay Speciale Cent Cinquante. If you are more looking for a dark beer, try Rochefort 10 or Westmalle Double.
Besides all the Belgian Trappist beers, we also have the entire range of La Trappe Beer. This is actually a Dutch Trappist beer, but it is just as good as the Belgian ones. Enjoy !
