Pils is the most popular beer style in Belgium. This beer style was developed in the Czech Republic in 1842 and it quickly spread across Europe. In the late 19th Century and early 20th Century these beers conquered Belgium, and one brewery after the other started make their own pils beer. Pils is usually brewed with only four ingredients: water, malt, hops and yeast. It is a rather light beer and easy to digest.

Belgium’s two most famous Pils beers, Jupiler beer that is brewed in Jupille near Liege, and Stella Artois that is brewed in Leuven, are both owned by the multinational group AB Inbev whose headquarters are still in Leuven. Although both beers enjoy pretty much the same popularity in Belgium, Stella Artois is more widely known abroad. Both beers are rather similar in flavor.

Pils beer from the Limburg region, in the North-East of Belgium, has a slightly different flavor. Examples of these beers are Maes beer and Cristal Alken. A style within the style that deserves mentioning are the ’export’ beers, these have also a slightly different flavor. Examples of this style are Blauw Export Bierby brewery Bockor and Export 8 by brewery Haacht.
